Top 5: Guilt Free Cocktails

A new year strikes and bam, drinking goes from being trendy to tricky.

Even hint at the idea of meeting in a bar rather than the nearest paleo pop-up and all those dry January-ers look at you like you’ve murdered their mother. That’s not to say we don’t have our own health agenda – we do, starting with cutting down on sugar and upping the exercise quota – but all things in moderation, right?

If, like us, you’re not partaking in dry January but don’t want to over-indulge (can’t totally ignore the festively stretched stomach), then behold our list of the tastiest – but most guilt free – cocktails in town. Drink less but drink better, ladies.

1. Celery Cure, TOZI

Best for: the hale hedonist

For those looking to stay in shape without shouting about it, the Celery Cure by TOZI is your new BFF. Aesthetically it sits pretty alongside any other drink on the menu, so only you need know that it actually packs a health punch thanks to superfood ingredients, celery and lemon. Sit at the bar and watch the fresh ingredients muddled together with vodka for a delicate drink that is light on the stomach but heavy on the satisfaction. Cleansing and fresh, with a citrus kick that fades before becoming bitter, you can allow yourself two (maybe three) of these without feeling naughty. Just beware the passing cicchetti, which you may struggle to resist…

Celery Cure is priced at £9. TOZI, 8 Gillingham Street, London, SW1V 1HJ

carrot and ginger margarita

2. Carrot and Ginger Margarita, Sixtyone

Best for: the detox virgin

If you’re new to the world of juicing and feel you’re more daiquiri than detox, this is the one for you. Inspired by a medieval belief in the medicinal properties of alcohol, tequila is combined with anti-oxidant rich carrots and nutrient-rich ginger to create a mood boosting margarita. Agave syrup is used in place of sugar – resulting in a lighter, less calorific concoction – whilst rosemary and lemon juice add the sharpness associated with this Mexican favourite. And don’t be put off by the colour! This silky syrup slips down until you’re left with a lingering, light ginger taste. More than one and you may even start seeing in the dark (or is that the effect of the alcohol?…).

Carrot and Ginger Margarita is priced at £12.50. Sixtyone, 61 Upper Berkeley Street, London, W1H 7PP

3. Svenska Detox, Be At One

Best for: the hip and healthy

Anyone on top of their food fads knows that kale was the queen of greens in 2014. Add an edge to this veg by drinking the trend at cocktail institution, Be At One, where kale is blitzed with spinach, pineapple and citron vodka to create a long and refreshing drink. Heavy on the health factor but with a hint of imp given the alcohol, pineapple and agave syrup cut through the kale, balancing out the bitterness and leaving a lasting citrus edge. Looks like a smoothie, tastes like a treat. Who said being healthy means being boring?

Svenska Detox is priced at £8.50. Available at 23 locations across London, Reading, Brighton, Bristol and Milton Keynes.

Ruba Remedy

4. Ruba Remedy, TwoRuba

Best for: the stressed soul

Toast to a year of good health with the Ruba Remedy, a fragrant blend of lemongrass infused vodka, tomato juice, beetroot juice and spices. Featuring immune-boosting beets, which remain one of the most popular superfoods, this colourful concoction is a twist on the classic Bloody Mary. Zesty, spicy and packed full of iron and folic acid, beetroot is known to lower blood pressure and improve athletic performance. It may even help hinder a hangover, too. Just what the doctor ordered!

Ruba Remedy is priced at £11 (or £6 if ordered without alcohol). TwoRuba, 5 More London Place, Tooley Street, London, SE1 2BY

5. Skinny Hummingbird, the happenstance

Best for: the calorie conscious

If you can’t quite bring yourself to jump on the juice bandwagon then you will love the inspired range of skinny cocktails at City haunt, the happenstance. No superfoods in sight here, just classics with a decreased calorie count. Our favourite is the Skinny Hummingbird, an English twist on a Cosmo which mixes gin, elderflower cordial, raspberries and lemon for a fresh and fulfilling treat that doesn’t tip the scales. It tastes as pretty as it looks, too, and weighs in at only 95 calories a glass. Genius!

Skinny Hummingbird is priced at £8.95. the happenstance, 1a Ludgate Hill, London, EC4M 7AA
