How to Help Your Business Run Smoothly

Running a business from home can be stressful and result in a lot of late nights on your laptop.

Your first year of running a business will involve huge changes to your routine and getting used to the whole concept of what it is to be your own boss. The sad fact is that a large percentage of entrepreneurs fail within the first year – let’s make sure you’re not one of them.

Structure your day

Now that you are your own boss, you no longer have a set structure to follow during your working day. You need to step up to the plate and make your own rules. It can be incredibly daunting to start the day with a blank slate. There are no longer set lunch times, coffee breaks and working hours; you need to make your own rules. The best thing to do is write down every part of your business, each task you’ll need to complete each week, and how long it approximately takes. You can then make a timetable and start arranging your work week, until you have a schedule you are happy with.

Stay connected

OneNote will be your new best friend as a business owner. Sure, nothing beats that feeling of putting pen to paper – however, when you are out and about you’ll want to have access to your notes in case you have a stroke of genius. Make a section in your online notebook for bright ideas, future planning, and things you need to do. It means that when you get back to your desk you can carry on with your day without spending ages noting down things you missed.

Motivate yourself

As the owner of your empire, you are your only motivation. Make time to start a bullet journal and set regular goals for yourself each month. At the end of the month, recap your goals and see whether you have achieved them, and why you didn’t achieve certain things. It may just mean you need to make some time next month to complete the task, or find a better way of dealing with the issue than tackling it yourself.

Work hard, play hard

Now that you are the sole person responsible for your business being successful, it can be all too easy to get stuck in a vicious cycle of working from 7am to 9pm each day. However, it’s not good for your mental or physical health to overwork yourself. Learn to find a positive work/life balance and make time for your family and friends.

Dip your finger in many pies

Not literally, of course. Now that you don’t have a marketing team on hand, or anyone to manage your filing, or a team of dedicated logistics professionals, you’re going to have to learn a lot. You don’t need to become an expert in every part of running a business overnight, but having a working understanding of the process is helpful. You may even find that you outsource certain things such as finance. Find the best xero accountants which suit your business model and save yourself an arduous task.
