Cocktail Hour: ‘The Breakfast Club’ by The Daffodil
Whether you have a penchant for singing the Simple Minds anthem ‘Don’t You (Forget About Me)’ whilst rocking your denim coat/letterman’s jacket/pink blouse, or whether you simply fancy a good old drink, ‘The Breakfast Club’ at The Daffodil might be one for you.
The name actually has little to do with the film and everything to do with the ingredients: a fruity concoction of Seville oranges, Cotswold marmalade, orange vodka, lemon, sugar and Cointreau. The only thing the cocktail doesn’t come with is bacon and eggs. It’s like a more complex (and boozy) take on Tropicana.
Though you could get away with this in the morning, I sipped mine in the evening after a long, tiring day at work. I was hoping for refreshment and, on that front, the cocktail certainly delivered. Juicy, fruity and tangy without being sour, the drink really pepped me up whilst delivering a nice hit of alcoholic warmth. Very pleasant.
My one criticism would be a lack of defined vodka flavour: with so much fruit going around, I wonder if they really need to go citrus with the voddy, too. A shot of plain ol’ Grey Goose would have cut through the sweetness and given the cocktail a bit more punch.
