The Real Deal
Brief overview of what you do:
I founded and run a tour operator business that specialises in off the beaten track luxury safaris throughout East and Southern Africa. When I set up on my own five years ago, I decided that every single trip would include a unique and magical experience, as I think travel can have a huge impact on your life. I’m really passionate that each of our clients receives a totally personalised experience with lightening quick, round-the-clock service, access to better rates and a vast wealth of knowledge.
Can you describe your job in 3-5 words?
Daily Africa-filled heaven.
What is the first thing you do when you get to work?
Reply to my clients. I can’t wait to see what’s come in overnight and then start to dream up their perfect holiday. Because of this, work often begins immediately on waking and at some point I have to try and fit in breakfast – but sometimes it’s lunchtime before I know it!
What does a typical day at your desk look like?
I try to be hyper-organised with my time as there can be a lot going on at once. I have copies of each of the itineraries I’m working on, in order of priority, on my desk to ensure I stay on top of everything.
What’s been the best moment of your career so far?
Setting up on my own in 2010 was a real career highlight. I was pretty young but felt ready to take on the challenge. Also seeing the meerkats in Botswana’s Makgadikgadi Pans. I am very fortunate to be able to travel regularly, which I love.
Your job – the good, the bad, the ugly:
Sending people to some of the most extraordinary places in the world, and seeing their response when they get back, is amazing. Rude clients are not. We offer a ‘gentleman’s service’ and usually deal with fantastic people from all over the globe, but some clients do treat you like a skivvy!
What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
Don’t become greedy.
How do you relax and recharge?
Reading anything and everything to do with old school Africa. I also look after my dog and horse, and try and ride as much as possible to give me a breather from work.
What is your guilty pleasure?
Home and Away
What would you take to a desert island?
Complete this statement: I feel most powerful when wearing_____ a cosy cashmere jumper.
What social or political issues matter most to you?
The current war on poaching. Africa’s wildlife is in crisis and will disappear on our watch. We recently set up donatetowildlifeconservation.com to try and get the luxury safari industry to push clients towards small projects working tirelessly on the ground in Africa, often without funding.
